Hair Salon

An app that will solve all your concerns from the moment you thought of straightening/ extensions / special colors, to the moment you are at the hair salon until after the treatment.

Project type

App project for a UX course in Communication Studies at Reichman University.

Date

May 2022- Juny 2022

My Role

I was a leading UX researcher in a team of 3 students. My role was leading the research and UX design. I enjoyed interviewing, and understanding who my users are, and what are their pains, and motivations.

About the Project

As part of a UX course at Reichman University, I was assigned to make a Holistic analysis from scratch to the end, of the customer experience. Understanding and building the customer journey from the beginning even before using the product to the end of using the product (and sometimes even after), is a tool that was important to me, in order to create the best solution for my client and his users. My client is Tom Shoresh, a hairstylist. He spent most of his career (20 years) in London and Paris, where he specialized in his profession, and now he has returned to Israel. Tom is interested in opening a hair salon specializing in straightening, hair extensions, and special colors. Tom like technology, but his hair salon has no internet presence at all. This is where I came into the picture, my goal was to help Tom raise his hair salon a few level up’ with some research and a new app.

The challenge

Long process

The process is long, tedious, boring and exhausting.

There is no confidence in a hairstylist

Customers often change hairdressers and therefore do not always know the specific hair stylist they go to and are therefore often afraid that he will not be good.

The "day after"

Customers do not have centralized information in one place that gives them confidence after the treatment and explains to them how to take care of their hair when follow-up treatments are needed, what materials to buy, and more

The Solution

Interviews

I conducted interviews with a variety of women in different ages who make hair straightening/ hair extensions/ coloring in special colors, in order to understand the deepest problem to create a good UX solution.

Internet research

In the Internet research, I looked at social media and websites of different hairdressers to understand how they present themselves, what they showing, and which audience they address. In addition, I looked at Facebook groups and Internet forums to understand what questions being asked and who are the people that ask.

experience mapping

I create the experience mapping to understand better the process that the client go throw and what their action, thoughts, feelings, and beliefs.

Definition of the solution

After the internet research, the interviews, the definition of the challenges, and the creation of an experience mapping, I decided on three possible solutions that would be concentrated in one application. The solution is to create an app for Tom’s hairdressing salon and use it to solve the three challenges I mentioned. The application will be divided into three parts.

1. The first part

The first part , when the user decide to do some change in the hair, and he looking for an information and an hair salon. This part will answers the challenge that people don’t trust the hairstyle.  With this solution, they will get all the information that they need : pictures and videos of the place and the different process, Details about the team, Recommendations from clients and the possibility to content them and ask a question directly, Q&A, Information about the hair materials and about the process, and Creating a personal profile.

2. The second part

The second part is when the user came to the hair salon. This part will answer the challenge of the long boring, and tedious process. one of the main challenges that mention a few times was that clients don’t have any information about the levels and the duration of the process.  To answer this challenge I create a time line that the client could see how much time is the process, which level he is , how much time is between levels and how many left. In addition, I gave the client the option between every level to do something that passes his time in a fun way, like games,  hair article, and tips for “the day after”.

3. The third part

The third part is for the “day after”.  This part will answer the challenge that client don’t know how to take care of the hair after the treatment.  in this part I choose to prove my clients that Tom Shoresh is still there for them even after mounthes later. in this part there will be tips for how to take care your hair, When should you renew, A reminder to make an appointment and the possibility to make an appointment through the app.

final solution

In this project, I decided to focus on the second part and create him. I decided exactly this because this was the main challenge that
I figure through research , and this was seems to me like the important part to implement.

Website for a client

Date

October 2021- December 2021

My Role

I was the Lead UX/UI Designer throughout the project. I was responsible for planning strategy, finding research, and was responsible for the visual design.

About the Project

In this project,  I presented a rehab center in Thailand named “The Beach Thailand”. An image site that presents a rehab center that solves the problems for addicts.

The Challenge

Users Challenge

The challenge was the feeling of loneliness, boredom, distance from the family, and returning to the addiction after leaving the rehab center

Project Challenge

  • Diffraction
  • Lack of budget
  • Lack of time
  • Covid
  • Lack of accessibility

The Solution

Stakeholders Interviews

  • Business requirement:
To help addicts quit, in the best and fastest way, at the rehab center.
  • What are the needs (why was the rehab center created):
The founder says that he has dealt most of his life with drug addiction, he reached a low point and has not been able to help himself get out of the addiction. The only thing that helped him was the rehab center he went into, which made him quit completely. The past led the founder to want to help people like him who are in the same situation.
  • What are the main things he wants to present on the site:
He wants to showcase the benefits of the location, the warm and experienced team, the family and supportive vibes, the treatments, and the wide range of activities.
  • Target Audience:
Most of the customers who come are men aged 25-60.
They usually come from England, USA, Austria, and New Zealand.
Most of them are in high socio-economic class, they live the good life and love luxury and pampering, and that’s why they choose rehab center in Thailand

Insights from the interview

User motivation

    pictures/inspiration pictures?
  • How many pictures?
  • How do are presenting the content?
  • What kind of information do they present?
  • What kind of information don’t they present?
  • How long is every paragraph?

App project for a UX course in Communication Studies at Reichman University.

Date

My Role

I was a leading UX designer in a team of 3 students. My role was leading the research and designing the application based on the research. I enjoyed producing the personas, understanding who my users are, who the competitors are and what they are doing. With this research, I have been able to make better design decisions.

About the Project

As part of a UX course at Reichman University,  I was assigned to create an app in groups on any subject I chose. My partner told me that she had moved apartments and was unable to find a recycling bin for cartons in her new neighborhood.
Following this story, I created a recycling app, that makes the locations of the bins accessible by using navigation, provides information about the different types of bins, and shows cleaning days and lectures on the subject o fhelping the environment. The main purpose of the app is to raise awareness of recycling and to make recycling more efficient.

The challenge

Pollution in Israel is worsening, a large part of it is because of the lack of recycling. While most residents are aware of the problem, and want to do more to help the environment, they don’t succeed in doing so.
Below are the core problems this product aims
to solve:

Lack of accessibility-

Most people don't know where the closest recycling bins are to their homes

Lack of time -

People are really busy and they don't have time to search for recycling bins.

Lack of knowledge-

People usually know individual bins (green, blue, and orange) but there are so many different bins. In addition, they usually don't know which product belongs to which bin, and therefore they throw their trash in the nearest bin, even if it is not suitable.

The Solution

Interviews

At the discovery phase of my project, I conducted user interviews in order to get a better understanding of the problem. I decided to conduct in-depth interviews with different types of people that could represent my target audience.
I did in-depth interviews rather than questionnaires because I felt it was necessary to get to know the person, their motivations, needs, difficulties, and pains in order to create an app that suited them in the best way possible.
I interviewed people that differ from one other, in order to reach as many different target audiences as possible.

Examples of questions I asked the interviewees:

  • Is there anything that would have helped you
    recycle more?
  • Is there anything that makes it difficult for you
    to recycle?
  • Would you like to recycle more? Why?

Insights from the interviews

User motivation

Most of the interviewees expressed interest in recycling and doing more for the environment than they are currently doing.

Difficulties of users

Most of the interviewees said that their main difficulty in recycling is the lack of accessibility, time and knowledge.

Competition analysis

As part of the market analysis, I was looking for similar apps, in order to understand if there is needs in the market, and how my app would be different from others. I found 4 similar apps and I wrote about how each app is similar to my idea and how it’s different. In addition, I created a system of axes, I presented the topic of the information feature and the navigation feature. It was important for me to choose these topics because, according to the research, I realized that for users the navigation to the desired bins and the information about the types of bins is very important and necessary.

Definition of the problem

1. Choosing the main problem

From the main problems that arose from the interviews and the construction of the personas, I mentioned 5 main problems. From those, I chose the most significant problem that I would focus on (accessibility).

Generic stickies1

2. Framing the problem

After I found the most significant problem, I built a question that would define the problem and guide me: “How can I make the issue of recycling accessible to the general public?”

3. Ideation

To solve the main problem in the best way, I thought of 10 different ideas of solutions, then I chose three of them which I think were the most suitable ideas for solving the main problem, and from them, I chose the chosen idea which is the app I created.

Storyboard

Personas

I created the personas to understand who the main users of the app are/would be, and to focus more specifically on their personality traits, who they are, what their needs are, what are their motivations, and what are their difficulties. I created the personas based on the insight of the interviewees. After creating the personas, it became clear to me that most people want to do more for the environment, but don’t, mainly because of the lack of time, accessibility, and knowledge.

Design process

Sketches

I usually start the design with sketches, to plan how everything will look, see the line of thinking and design, do a brainstorm and see how the research that I have done on the users, has come into the design. For the home screen, I created 3 different versions. The version that I chose also changed after I did a user test. On the home screen, it was important that the map is in the center, in order to give the users the answer to their needs. In addition, I built a short questionnaire to allow more direction within the app for each user. I made a short and concise questionnaire for a short and easy process.

Low fidelity wireframes

UI Design

Before designing the app, I looked at various websites and apps to take inspiration. Taking what I saw, I built an inspiration board which helped me throughout the design process. When I started designing it was important to me to convey a clean and fresh visual style, I did this by using shades of green, round font, icons, and more. I designed it for mobile use, I did it because most people who want to search now for a bin or information, will want to do it immediately. During the design, I changed the home page several times. One of the times I understood, according to the users, that the initial search of the bins should be searched by-product, to do so effectively, I inserted a carousel of different products that when the user clicks on one of them he sees a map with the bins related to the products closest to him.

User Testing

Before launching the product, I did a Guerrilla testing round, in order to reveal possible usability problems. For the Guerrilla Testing, I built five tasks that the users will check in the app. I walked around Reichman University, and let five people check out the app. I documented them and asked them to speak out loud and explain every action they do. Through this, I was able to understand what parts they did easily, and what they were having a hard getting into. From the results, I discovered two recurring problems, which were incomprehensible to the users. In the second round, I built five different tasks, and again, five people were tested and I came across two problems that recurred in the users. Following the Guerrilla tests, I made some changes to the app.
